Different Types Of Heating

There are many different heaters to choose from, however all heaters falls into four different categories. Each category of heating has its own advantages and disadvantages, it is always important to ensure to choose the correct type of heating for your home or business.

Firstly it is important to understand why the choice of heater can have such an impact. In the end it comes down to not power, but where the heater is and how it is used. For example if you have a large living room or office you do not want a heater that only heats directly in front of it. On the other hand to keep a section of room warm and be economic you do not want a heater which will fill the room with heat.

The first type of heater, the most common, is the convector heater. In a convection heater, the heating element heats the air next to it by conduction. Hot air is less dense than cool air, so it rises due to buoyancy, allowing more cool air to flow in to take its place. This sets up a constant current of hot air that leaves the appliance through vent holes and heats up the surrounding space.

The second type is the radiant heater. Radiant heaters contain a heating element that reaches a high temperature. The element is usually packaged inside a glass envelope resembling a light bulb and with a reflector to direct the energy output away from the body of the heater.

The third type is the storage heaters. A storage heating system takes advantage of cheaper electricity prices, sold during low demand periods such as overnight.

The final type of heating is the A fan heater is a variety of convection heater that includes an electric fan to speed up the airflow. This reduces the thermal resistance between the heating element and the surroundings, allowing heat to be transferred more quickly.

It is possible to have heaters which combine different types of heater together to increase the power for use of a heater. An example would be a storage heater with a boot option; the boost option is normally an extra fan which temperately turns on to boost the heat in the room.

The advantage of having multiple types of heating built into one is the increased versatility. Whereas most heating types have their limitations, by combining heating methods and types you remove restrictions that would normally cost a heater.

You must take into account where the heater will be placed. Heaters that are not in direct view need to spread the warmth in the room and not heat directly. If you choose a high powered heater and misuse how it was indented you can put yourself at risk.
